What do we want children to learn?

At Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CE Primary, we recognise that Art and Design embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity and is a great way to stimulate curiosity, creativity and imagination. We aim to provide a high-quality art and design education that engages, inspires and challenges children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

We continually develop children’s experiences of art to explore ideas and meanings through sequences of lessons that are challenging and inspiring whilst following the National Curriculum. Our lessons value the time required to observe, experiment, express and review our work and the work of others. We enjoy exploring the work of a range of recognised artists from the past and present, in order to reflect upon how art and design have shaped our history, culture and the creativity of our nation.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

    1. - Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
    2. - Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
    3. - Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
    4. - Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

How do we teach Art and Design?              The AccessArt Badge

To achieve our aims, lessons follow the AccessArt curriculum. Children are challenged and motivated, enhancing their love for learning. The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art topic are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. Art takes place weekly, three terms a year and is collected together at the end of a block to capture the skills, experiences and progress covered during this time.

Where possible, each unit of work aims to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to:

    - Record from first-hand experience and observation

    - Develop imagination and creativity

    - Experiment with new and developing skills and techniques

    - Develop the ability to control tools, materials and techniques

    - Experience a range of artists and develop reflection in pieces of work

    - Develop vocabulary associated with art and artists

    - Develop increasing confidence and enjoyment in expression and discussion of art and artists

    - Have constructive verbal feedback to support further progression and development.

Art takes place weekly, three terms a year and is collected together at the end of a block to capture the skills, experiences and progress covered during this time. Art is planned using AccessArt curriculum and we ensure children use high-quality equipment and resources.

On leaving Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CofE Primary School, children will:

Children will develop a strong appreciation and enthusiasm for Art and Design through our commitment to recognising and nurturing their talents and artistic abilities. We celebrate and display children’s work, allowing them to express themselves creatively.

By the end of each key stage, we aim for all children to be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. We ensure they can apply and understand the skills, knowledge and processes taught.
