SEND

United in a love for learning, we will grow and succeed together.

At Ashbury, every child belongs and is supported to grow and succeed. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do and underpins our school ethos. We are passionate that all children, no matter what their starting point is, will be nurtured and championed to achieve their full potential.

Our Universal offer has Inclusion as a golden thread running through everything we do. Our ethos that 'what works for SEND, works for all' can be seen through our curriculum, our pedagogy and our classroom environments.

Oracy at Ashbury

Oracy is a focus throughout the school, from our youngest children in Little Berries Preschool, to the eldest children in Year 6. We want all children to leave Ashbury with the confidence and skills to use their voice, advocate for themselves and contribute to the wider world.

We baseline every child with WellComm when they enter Reception. We prioritise the importance of children’s early language development. Therefore, early identification and intervention using WellComm, enables our children to leave Reception with the language skills to engage with their next stage of learning. Our EYFS Team also use the Shrec Approach, ensuring that quality interactions support the development of our children’s early language development. Our Early Years Lead and Wayland Class teacher, Mrs Richards, is also the EYFS SEND Lead for the Trust.

Every child at Ashbury has the opportunity to take part in an annual performance, whether the Christmas Nativity, the Summer Play or ‘Ashbury’s Got Talent’. We feel it is important for all our children to have the opportunities to take part in these events and gain confidence in performing to an audience.

Within lessons, we use ‘Think, Pair, Share’ and provide a number of opportunities for talk partners. Not only does this develop oracy opportunities but allows children to develop their responses through discussing them with their peer first.

We are a mainstream, academy school. Our SEND children are fully integrated into our three classes with small group spaces used for specific interventions.
